Mike Crawford is a licensed, professional fly fishing guide. A native of Syracuse, Mike studied forestry and wilderness recreation leadership in Saranac Lake in the early 90's. Learning from the best guides and outdoor leaders in the Adirondacks, Mike became a Wilderness Education Association certified outdoor leader in 1993.

As a seasonal forest ranger for the NYSDEC and then as an arborist for the USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Mike spent over 12 years working in the forests and backcountry of the Adirondacks and Central New York.    Becoming a NYS licensed guide with the NYSDEC Lands & Forests Division in 2003 and earning his USCG Masters License in 2004, Mike then began Upstate Guide Service. Guiding on the weekends, he started his pursuit of a lifelong dream to lead others outdoors as a professional guide. In 2013, Mike made the transition from “the real world” to full-time professional guiding. His contagious love of fly fishing, coupled with the experience and skills he has acquired in a lifetime of leading others outdoors, Mike set out to make Upstate Guide Service the hardest working and most successful professional guide service in Upstate New York.

Today, in 2019 Upstate Guide Service is an insured S-Corporation. Mike and other professional guides he employs lead beginner and expert fly fishers, waterfowlers, light- tackle lake anglers and ice anglers on the numerous lakes, streams and rivers of Upstate New York. His work, his guiding and Mikes’ perpetual desire to be in the wilderness has taken him throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Mikes’ passion for cold-water conservation and Upstate New Yorks’ spectacular environments has made his guide service well known throughout New York State. But it is all the friendships made, over the years, that continue to keep Upstate Guide Service successful! Mike always works hard to exceed the expectations of his guests with an experienced guide service that takes great satisfaction and pride in sharing with others the fascinating natural world of Upstate New York!
