I have chosen to promote two reel companies with JP Ross Fly Rods.  Galvan and Abel Fly Reels.  I have done so because these companies are American Made and they really know quality.  I also like being able to call a company and speak to a person I know.  I get this service from both Galvan and Abel.  But especially at Abel; Jeff the sales manager is a great guy and really takes the time to tell me what is going on.  He gets our brand and wants to be a part of it.  Here is a recent interview we had with Abel.

What do people LOVE most about Abel reels? / your value proposition?

Reliability, the tradition – 25 years   enjoyed a reputation for a reel that can standup to elements –

Smoothness of the drag system –

How did Abel Reels all begin?

Started as aerosmith co – high end machine shop

Founder was a fly fisherman – had the high tolerance machines for the gov't work, so did his own fly reel to support his own hobby

Late 80s – unheard of anyone paying $600 for a reel! – but founder didn't want to compromise quality of the reel to meet a budget

When cold war ended and more military / job shop work was harder to come by… (Jeff in 1992 – 25% fly fishing, have been 100% fly fishing well over 15 years) transitioned into 100% fly fishing

Why still in USA/USA made?

We make everything right under our roof, every screw

Anodize ourselves, every spool every frame – difficult to job it out – don't even like to buy from other Amer manufacturers… that way we can control the tolerances

Why aircraft aluminum?

It's not just 60-61   T like higher

Cold rolled aluminum – denser alum; a LOT more expensive twice the price –

But allows us to machine them thinner, to keep them lighter while not compromising durability

Why do you machine your own screws?

Same deal  -It allows us to control the quality more than anything; it'd certainly be cheaper to buy them – wouldn't get the quality and breaking our business model of all under our roof

The graphics on the reels – painted by hand or machine?

Emphasize HANDPAINTED individually in the factory; some are doing shrinkwrap or silkscreen but not Abel… DONE BY HAND INDIVIDUALLY; we have a  brown trout reel  that takes 5-6 hours to paint  each one - look better, more durable, simply makes each a piece of art; the uniqueness + performance + aesthetics

Every reel is HAND POLISHED (vs medium/tumbling) before they're hand painted

Do you anodize in house?

Yes – everything within our business model is to keep it all right here under one roof

What is warranty?

Lifetime warranty on the reels – leave on top of truck and they drive off at 50 mph they don't warranty that – all manufacturers defects, etc – we usually make it work out for the customer

Can you disclose how many reels a year you make?  Don't know really believe it or not! Do know there's a major Upswing happening , majority of the industry is experiencing this… there've been some tough times last few years… getting better each year – 2011 wasbest Xmas in 6 years; as #s of fly shops have dwindled, less competition – for those who've plugged along, those shops and co's are doing better and consumers are tiring of the lack of quality from overseas and are turning back toward higher end, quality American made materials – overseas consumers are turning to American made high end quality too

Our product doesn't work in a bass pro shop; too nice of a product and the price point tolerance isn't there

At this pricepoint people want to hold the reel, see why it is what it is, catalogs and pics don't do our products justice; we hear that all the time!

Our partners - The one's who stock the inventory - +++ $ sales because if the customer can hold it, see it, there's generally a sale

Understanding somewhat JP Ross Fly Rod & Co… how do you view a partnership and what do you believe Abel can bring to the table for the brand and partnership?

Every nice fly rod should have a nice fly reel and vice versa…  there was a time customer would buy a really nice rod and the reel was just a line holder; it's almost flipped today – really nice reel on a less expensive fly rod in some cases!

With JP Ross,

Our beliefs are similar – and in this case, one brand compliments another;

It's sacrilege to put a lousy reel on a nice rod… being similar to us/quality, an American made co,

the made over seas stuff was great for awhile, but quality not there, and it's turning;

I've heard the excitement and enthusiasm in JP's voice and he's assured me he'll retain our pricing and protect the product.

We've been open to going outside the normal business model because, ya know, the world's changing, business is changing… and we're finding with a high quality rod maker, their customers want the high quality reel so it must makes more sense

 What is next for Abel?

Few new reels in mind, and while not straying from our core business of course of aluminum reels, we'll be looking further at ++accessories, like our machine nipper for example (we thought we'd sell 2-3000 and we sold 9000 of 'em!) – well made, machined tool, nipper sells for $50, the highest end reel prior to ours was selling for $15!! – people thought we were nuts, arrogant, etc but quality sells, and not just here in the States – love it overseas; love buying nice, American made products – do a ton of int'l biz

….Liking Precision of an American made product

Some key take aways we got from Speaking to Jeff: Jeff said...

"Less than 30 people work at Abel; over half have been there over 15 years

Pretty special experience working there.

And even though we're a small co' we definitely try to do our best to support conservation efforts such as Trout Power – usually by donating reels etc or have % / proceeds from a created limited edition reel for that purpose go to a designated effort/initiative."

JP Ross begins selling Galvan Fly Reels

About 3 weeks ago I had a great conversation with the owner of Galvan Reels, Boni Galvan.

As the owner of JP Ross I wanted to team up with a Reel Company.  I wanted the reel to be a reflection of my style.  I did not want to have a reel made to my specifications, because I am not a mechanical engineer and I am not sure how to manipulate Aluminum.

I also was completely against getting a reel made for me in Asia as so many people are now doing.  Want to know if your reel was made overseas and is probably worth less than the great deal you paid for it.  Take a look at the anodization, take a look at the tolerances on the reel, take a look on the internet and see how many other companies have the same looking reel as you do.  Thats how you know.

I did not want that.

I wanted to get to know the company I was going to do business with.  After about 30 minutes on the phone I new that Gavan was the Reel Company I wanted to start with.  Here is a taste of what is to come from JP Ross and Galvan.

I am grateful that they want to do business with us.  They are family owned as we are too.

You will find these reels on our store.  But if you have immediate questions, please call me or email me.

Our assessment of Galvan Reels, by JP Ross

Well it is easy to say you are going to sell someones reel on your web site and then just take a bunch of photos from their catalog and post them on your site and hope for the best... but that is not what Galvan Reels and I discussed when we started our campaign.

Our first order of Galvan's recently came in, and after I write this posting I have to email them for our second order.

I wanted to give you my full assessment of what I believe makes them a quality product.

Anodization:  Aluminum will easily corrode, so anodizing a reel is important to the life of the tool.  The anodization of the Galvan Reels is very consistent and very bright in color.  Shown here is the copper anodization that we recently shipped out to a customer.  I also received black and green, which also was equality of the same quality.

Handle:  On the torque series I especially liked the texture and fit and finish of the handle.  The handle is slightly tapered and also has a few grooves machined into it to help give you more purchase when grabbing it.  Rather than just going smooth like most reels, Galvan put some extra time into their design to make it attractive and provide some utility to the design.

Attention to detail:  If you ever have talked to a machine shop and learned about the equipment that makes a reel, you will learn quickly about how many axis the system can move on.  You also will learn that making 90 degree angles is a lot easier than making curves.  The spokes on the Galvan reels are curved and machined to very tight tolerances.  Also, you will see in the attached pictures, that almost every surface that could be bored or machined out to make the reel more lighter without sacrificing structural rigidity was done.  I love nice rims on a car, especially the European Super Cars.  The look of the Galvan Reel reminds me of something I would see on a $100,000 super car.  And the best part is, there is a reason for the look of the reel.

You also will notice the very simple right hand to left hand conversions.  A simple flip of the pawl spring and you have gone from left hand to right hand.  What a great design.

Notice the counter balance that is used on the Torque Series.  A round counter balance would look wrong on such a design.  So Galvan has chosen to go with a design reminiscent of their shape.  This would easily be over looked on a designer trying to cut costs.  It was a great decision to go with a shape like this, it really makes the face of the reel stand out.

Made in USA:  Is cleanly visible on the back of the large drag knob.  I am turned off by the funky star patterns and over done shapes of some of todays drag knobs on modern reel designs.  A drag knob should be easily found, and easy to understand with your sense of touch.  The simplicity of the drag knob on the Galvan reels reminds me of that of a dash board of a 911 Porcshe.  Simple and functional.  If you have ever sat in the driver seat of a 911, you wil notice that the tachometer is front and center and easy to read.  The speedometer is off to the side and smaller.  The designers knew it was more important to know when to shift rather than how fast you are going.  I suppose Galvan thought the same thing... when you need to adjust your drag.. just do it, dont think about it.  Again, a great design.
