Old Forge to Georgia

Couple paddles the NFCT, then hikes the AT over six months

November 13, 2010 - By MIKE LYNCH, Enterprise Outdoors Writer

In September, Old Forge residents Catherine and Ryan Thompson completed a paddling and hiking trip that most people wouldn't even contemplate attempting.

The pair paddled the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail in the spring and followed that up by hiking 130 miles along logging roads to the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail in Baxter Park, Maine. From there, the married couple hiked through the summer all the way to the southern end of the trail in Georgia.

Benefitting from an early ice-out this year, the pair left their Old Forge home at 5:45 a.m. on April 15 and wheeled their 17-foot Royalex canoe to Old Forge Pond, where they set off on a cool, calm and clear day.

Over the next month, the pair would paddle a variety of Northeastern waters, from large, isolated lakes to Class II whitewater rivers.

Probably the biggest challenge for the Thompsons was dealing with the elements. Because they left so early in the season, they frequently found themselves paddling with temperatures hovering around freezing. They experienced cold rains, snow and winds strong enough to tip a boat.

"It is nerve racking because the air temperature was really, really cold," said the 27-year-old Catherine, who works as a manager at the Old Forge Campground. "The water temperature was really, really cold, and some of those remote sections, especially in Maine, there is no one else around."

Luckily, they never tipped, enduring various conditions that were presented to them. The couple crossed Lake Champlain on a day when the water was like glass and fought through whipping winds later on Chamberlain Lake in Maine.

They would wake as early at 3:45 a.m., paddling in the still morning waters and sleeping where they finished that day's paddle, not necessarily at designated sites. Sometimes they paddled all day; other times, they found themselves stopping early to wait out the weather.

"I think the part that we liked the best was that when you get wind bound, on the those big lakes - the weather's nasty, huge waves - we would wait, camp, and on the next morning get up at 4 o'clock in the morning and it would just be glass," Catherine said. "It was amazing to see the transformation. The night before you could never imagine paddling on it, and the next day it was a completely beautiful, sunrise paddle."

Averaging about 25 miles a day, the Thompsons had the canoe trail to themselves. Outside of a couple of kayakers, they didn't see any other paddlers the entire trip.

"We never saw another single canoer the entire way," said the 28-year-old Ryan, who spent 2005 to 2007 as the assistant forest ranger in the Moose River Plains. "We had every single waterway to ourselves."

But the isolation was part of the lure. They saw a moose wading in the water in Maine and an eagle dive for a fish.

They also got to enjoy the water in more ways than one.

"That was one of our favorite parts of the canoe trip, that we drank out of pretty much every lake that we paddled and river that we paddled," Catherine said.

But by May 10, the day they finished up in Fort Kent, Maine, the pair was ready for the second part of the adventure.

"It was really exciting to get out of the boat, at first, because by the end, we honestly got so fed up with canoeing," Catherine said. "It was cold, miserable, our hands hurt. We were sunburned. We looked like we were 15 years older. ... We were ready to stretch our legs."

So after finishing up the paddling portion of the trip, they ditched their boat and paddles by leaving them with a new friend, a local couple who offered to store them until a family member could pick them up.

They then replaced their paddling gear with hiking gear that they had mailed to a nearby post office in Portage, Maine, and headed for the Appalachian Trail. To get there, they hiked 130 miles through remote logging country, finally arriving at Mount Katahdin on May 27.

"It was exciting," Ryan said. "Leaving Old Forge, our goal was to get to that first white blaze on top of Katahdin. So that was like the high point."

But for every high point, there was always a dose of reality. High on Katahdin, that came when the couple considered how far they had come, but also how far they had to go.

"I think the newness (of hiking) kind of wore off a little because once you get to the top of the mountain, it dawns on you that you have 2,179 miles left to walk and that's only the beginning," Catherine said. "So the immensity of it took over."

But at least now they were in familiar territory. The pair had hiked the Appalachian Trail from south to north in 2008 and had hiked long sections of it 2005 and 2006.

They were able to use that experience to their advantage. The first time they attempted the Appalachian Trail they burdened themselves with 50- to 60-pound backpacks. This time they had packs that weighed only 10 to 13 pounds when fully loaded.

Catherine actually made smallish packs out of ripstop nylon that weighed less than a pound. She had also made a 1.75-pound tent. They shared a sleeping bag, which they often didn't even need because it was so hot, and carried literally the bare minimum. For rain gear, they used 99 cent ponchos.

They didn't carry the water filter from the canoe trip. Instead they relied on treating their water with chloride or iodine. Sometimes they picked up water in jugs left along the trail by good samaritans.

They also ditched their homemade denatured alcohol stove halfway through the hiking trip, preferring to eat cold food over pasta. They didn't have to carry more than three or four days worth of food because there were frequent resupply areas along the trail.

"It changes your mental state when you're hiking, especially when your carrying 10 pounds, because you're no longer focused on how much it hurts and how tired you are and how much your feet hurt," Catherine said.

But this trip was challenging for the Thompsons for several reasons. One was that they were heading south instead of north, so the end of the trip lacked the climax of hiking the White Mountains and then Katahdin to end the trip. Plus, the weather was hot in the south in the summer.

"It was hard," Catherine said. "We thought, honestly, that it would be easier because we knew what to expect and we had our system down, but it wasn't. It was a mental game."

By Virginia, the August heat had worn them down to the point that they decided they needed a break. So they took a few days off from the trip and stayed in a town. When they returned, they felt reinvigorated and blasted through the last part of the trip. On Sept. 23, they arrived at the southern terminus on Springer Mountain in Georgia.

Although they both said it was difficult to end the trip and readjust to living in society again, the immediate gratification of finishing the long trek was intense.

"We did what we set out to do, so there was an overwhelming sense of completion and fulfillment," Catherine said. "Old Forge to Georgia. It's kind of cool."

The water was up a little, but I could still make out some nice fish holding just off the bank. The wind and recent rain had brought many leaves down into the stream, so I knew that my best option would be to dead drift nymphs. I spent a good portion of the first 20 minutes or so probing the depths of the pool, but I could only come up with a sucker. I slid downstream about 20 feet to another part of a run with a pocket pool in the middle. A few drifts into this section produced a my first fish of the morning. I hooked up 3 more times landing 2 of those, including a nice 14" inch brown. My son had a great deal of fun helping reel in the fish and releasing them back to their home, and on occasion netting one or two for Dad. Read on.

                                                Access and Land Use Specialist

This past year has been a busy one regarding sportsmen's access and land use issues. The Counsel has taken an active role advocating for maintaining and expanding sportsman’s access on easement and state lands. The Moose River Plains UMP, the APA/DEC MOA regarding Easement Lands and the DEC Strategic Plan for State Forest Management all will have a significant impact on our ability to access hunting, fishing and trapping locations. The Status of these plans is as follows:

Moose River Plains - First for the bad news! The Draft Final Plan is out and has been approved by the Adirondack Park Agency. Despite tremendous public opposition to closing the Indian Lake Road (access to some of the best trout fishing in the northeast) and opposition to creating additional wilderness, the DEC has put forward a final plan to expand the wilderness by 14667 acres and shut down two miles of the Indian Lake Road starting at a parking lot which will be created one-half mile from Squaw lake. This means the public will have to walk two and one-half miles to get to Indian Lake to fish, canoe and enjoy nature. It is my understanding that discussions are under way to designate the last two miles of the Indian Lake Road as part of the North Country Scenic Trail, a hiking trail.

The 14667 acres wilderness expansion will be removed from existing wild forest and designated wilderness creating a new wilderness area of 12,270 acres south of the main Cedar River Road. The new wilderness would be formed on the North side of a mountain biking trail that will have Wild Forest designation. The other 2, 397 acres will be added to the West Canada Wilderness area.

Roadside Camping on the Moose River Plains will continue with some adjustments to site locations As I understand it the designation of an intensive use corridor within the Adirondack Park will require an addendum to the State Land master Plan. Let us not forget thsi was a preexisting condition and as such we gained very little. It also appears that agreement has been reached where none of the existing sites will be removed until new sites have been constructed. Floatplanes will be allowed. The UMP now goes to the Governor for his approval. The outcome in general is very disappointing for the sporting community when we consider this land was gifted to sportsmen by a timber company and many of the roads were actually deeded to insure access. The change in classification of the 14,667 acres of wild forest to wilderness requires the approval of the Governor; thus the future of the entire plan hinges on the Governors sign off and approval by the DEC Commissioner . Next steps are being considered.

Adirondack Park Agency / Department of Environmental Conservation MOA regarding Management of Easement Lands has been approved. A major concern was that the APA would be involved and would have to approve use of existing trails and roads for snowmobile and ATV use for sportsmen involved in hunting, fishing and trapping. It appears the DEC recognized that easement lands are private lands and that existing uses should not fall under the APA's purview. Following negotiations it appears APA oversight will be limited to new use and development and when the intensity of use by the public reaches a certain level. The Council provided extensive comments and it appears the comments supported the Department of Environmental Conservations thinking and helped facilitate a positive outcome. It now appears the traditional use of trails and roads on easement lands by sportsmen utilizing trucks, ATV's and snowmobiles will continue, contingent on easement language. The outcome appears positive for the sporting community.

DEC State Land Use Strategic Plan – A high number of public comments have been received on the plan and the Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing and preparing responses to the comments. As I understand it the Dec Commissioner must sign off on the plan. At this point it does not appear the plan will be approved during the current administration. The Council weighted in heavily on access issues pertaining to State Lands. The impact on sportsmen is unknown until the plan is finalized.

Champion Camp Retention – 200 camps occupied by Sportsmen are scheduled to be torn down per the Easement Agreement. Club members and the sporting community have lobbied, litigated and negotiated to see that the camps remain. The DEC after careful deliberation decided to support the camps remaining and is awaiting a final review from the APA. Environmental Groups are opposing the action and it would appear continued pressure from the sporting community is important at this point. The decision will be precedent setting in terms of keeping hundreds of camps on other easement lands. It seems people are realizing that the traditional hunting clubs have been good stewards of the land. Current outcome unknown.

Thank-you - As we conclude the year I would like to thank everyone that took their time to weigh in with Public and Elected Officials on the critical land use and access issues facing the sporting community. Our efforts are yielding some results; visit the Council’s website frequently for action alerts. If you are not a member of the N.Y.S. Conservation Council an application can be accessed at www.nyscc.com and click on "get involved".

A recent court ruling means the amount of water the Mohawk Valley Water Authority can draw from Hinckley Reservoir is still up for legal debate.

In May 2009, state Supreme Court Justice Samuel Hester ruled that the Water Authority could take up to 35 cubic feet per second from the reservoir – or about 23 million gallons per day.

That amount is more than the about 17 million gallons per day the authority currently uses but less than the 48 million gallons per day authority officials believe they have the right to, said John Murad, an attorney from Hancock and Estabrook in Syracuse who is representing the Water Authority.

The Water Authority is looking at the recent ruling as an opportunity to prove that it has the right to the full amount, Murad said.

“We think it can only get better,” he said.

In April 2005, after negotiations stalled in the Water Authority’s attempts to extend its services in Oneida and Herkimer counties, the authority filed a lawsuit against the state, the state Canal Corp. and Erie Boulevard Hydropower. All entities involved filed appeals to Hester’s May 2009 decision.

On Friday, the state Supreme Court Appellate Division Fourth Judicial Department modified Hester’s ruling – cancelling his decision about the amount of water that can be drawn.

The case will now go back to Hester to make a ruling based on issues related to whether the Water Authority is required to provide compensating flows for water it takes from Hinckley Reservoir, Murad said.

Still reviewing ruling

Friday’s Appellate Division decision also dismissed all claims made in the case by Erie Boulevard Hydropower, which relies on Hinckley Reservoir and West Canada Creek to produce electricity.

The power company is reviewing the decision but is pleased with aspects of the ruling relating to the agreements that govern the operation of the reservoir, according to an e-mailed statement from Julie Smith-Galvin, a spokeswoman for Brookfield Renewable Power Inc., which owns Erie Boulevard Hydropower.

Brookfield encourages the Water Authority to focus on installing low-level pumping and rebuilding the Gray Reservoir, which the Water Authority tore down in 2002, Smith-Galvin said.

An e-mailed statement from Canal Corp. Director of Canals Carmella Mantello also brought up the pumping and the need for a second reservoir.

“In the long term, construction of a new dam and reservoir is necessary for economic development in the Mohawk Valley region, regional water supplies and the production of clean, renewable hydropower,” Mantello said.

A second reservoir?

The Canal Corp. is continuing to push for federal funding for the construction of a new $50-million, 6-billion gallon reservoir to be located near where the Gray Reservoir was, Mantello said Monday.

Canal officials have been talking with local and federal officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but the plan would need unified support – including from the private sector, she said.

Water Authority Executive Director Patrick Becher, who referred questions Monday to Murad, has said a new reservoir is not necessary and that low-level pumping has been looked into and would be expensive on a permanent basis.

Becher also has said the Gray Reservoir was only used once for a test and would have made little or no difference in situations of low water levels such as 2007, when the reservoir dropped to within a few feet of potentially affecting the local water supply.

The Appellate Division ruling indicates that Hester’s decision on water access hinges on issues related to Gray Reservoir and whether the Water Authority is required to provide compensating flows in its absence.

Judy Drabicki the Regional Director for Region 6th will be our guest speaker. It will be a chance to correct some of the misinformation that is out there and find out how the Riverkeeper’s can help in regards to the Water Diversion issues of the West Canada Creek and Hinckley Reservoir. At this point the potential Water Crisis of 2010 has receded but that doesn’t mean we should wait tell the next one.

Just for a history lesson the report from the HWG is a good document however much information was excluded because of the lawsuit between MVWA and the Canal Corp. http://www.health.state.ny.us/environmental/investigations/hinckley_reservoir/docs/2008-04-30_report_to_the_governor.pdf

I am assuming they could save money if they didn’t have to run all the water they take through the Water Treatment Plant to only use almost half because of leaks. Just a thought: They were still finding old wood pipes just a few years ago and it can’t help make you wonder how the water quality after it goes through leaking pipes. I would think it is can leak out something can leak in.

How many of the recommendations from the HWG have been implemented?

How much money is being spent on these lawsuits? It isn’t just legal fees but engineers, hydrologists, PR etc. Could money be saved if almost half the water that goes through the Water Treatment Plant wasn’t lost due to leaks? It seems a waste to treat water that is lost due to leaks.
May 4th. the FFAA, JP Ross Fly Rods, TU, The New York DEC and the West Canada River keepers will be meeting with Brookfield Power to discuss the current state of the river flows in the West Canada.

The attached graphs give you a 120 day and a 60 day picture of the river at Kast Bridge.

Please note that this data was collected all the way down at Herkimer and not at the mouth of the discharge at Trenton Falls. That means there is a lot of water coming in from other tribs.

What you will see is a trend that the river flows are going down slightly and also that every day, the river is pulsed.

The alternative is... make your own power.

We need power, and we need to conserve the ecosystem.

Issues we have with the West Canada is that many people, including the DEC thinks that this stream is a put and take fishery. Many of us think it is not, but we have no data to prove it, other than a small brookie and small brown trout caught here and there.

The DEC is using old data to make decisions on this river, and the rest of the organizations are just doing what they have licenses to do.
