Rod Build: C. Barclay Custom Muir

When I designed the MUIR 7 foot 3 weight 5 piece, I wanted to create something that we could share.  Something that would make people happy, perhaps even more than our Beaver Meadow small stream rod.

So recently when we saw a post from C. Barclay Rods showing us how different our blank could look when a different style is embraced, it turns out we were the one that was most happy.

When I designed the MUIR 7 foot 3 weight 5 piece, I wanted to create something that we could share.  Something that would make people happy, perhaps even more than our Beaver Meadow small stream rod.   In describing the MUIR vision rod, this is what I wrote.  Imagine you are in a time machine and that time machine stops its light speed flight and the door opens.  It opens to a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains, and a river coming right out of the rocks that frame your vision.  Its the late 1800s and you are walking around Yosemite Valley in California and you come upon a man sitting on the side of the river.  Just sitting...  and looking.   You approach him in your trucker cap with flat flap and sling back, or your fedora and fly fishing vest and you ask him, "what the hell are you...

JP Ross Builds Custom Fly Rod for Saltwater Fly Rodders

For a recent fund raiser, JP Ross built and donated a saltwater fly rod for the Saltwater Fly Rodders club. Here is a link to their very informative web site.www.saltwaterflyrodders.orgSaltwater Fly Rodders Pacific#1 was formed in 1968 and has since then been the only club on the west coast devoted solely to saltwater fly-fishing.Many of our past and present members pioneered saltwater fly fishing on the west coast and in Mexico during the ‘50s and ‘60s when saltwater fly fishing was virtually unheard of.The club’s membership numbers around fifty. We are from diverse backgrounds, but our main fishing interest is saltwater fly-fishing. We have plied our sport worldwide, fishing in locations such as Thailand, Australia, The Seychelles, the Pacific Islands, Baja (both in the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. We can’t leave out mainland Mexico (the Pacific and Caribbean, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama) and Canada. Our members have fly-fished both...

Finished the Yellow Glass Eagle Creek Special fiberglass rod for Cameron at Fiberglass Manifesto

It has been a long time in the works for this custom fly rod, but well worth the wait. The fly rod for Fiberglass Manifesto should arrive today. This rod is based on our 6 foot 11 inch 3 piece yellow glass Eagle Creek Special. The rod is very light and was rolled for us by Mike McFarland. This rod was a blend of what Cameron wanted on the rod and what our abilities are to do as a custom rod builder. Over 16 years now we have been making fly rods for the fishing trade and this rod ranks quite high on the list. I have one other fly rod for my buddy Travis that will be shipping out next week that we will show to you all. That rod is probably also in the top ranks as the most beautiful yellow glass we have ever made. Back to the...

Fly rod blanks: Tube Width, weight and levered weight

Here is a compliment/ constructive criticism for one of our fly rods. If you look at our specifications sheet you will see the weight of our blanks is on there. This customer was great, and honest. So here are some things to consider about graphite rods and their characteristics.Width. The width of the rod can actually make the rod lighter. It is the amount of resin to graphite ratio that is important as well as the wall thickness. You can make a fly rod be light and have a large diameter tube if you decrease the wall thickness or increase the modulus of the graphite. All things to consider when designing a fly rod. Also, consider the attached drawing. The further away from the center line the more the fiber will bend when under stress. Although I do not have the stress/strain curves for 36 million modules graphite. I can tell...

Wards Angler Pride Bamboo FLy Rod, 9 foot three piece two tips, Refurbished by JP Ross

There is not much that I know about the Wards Anglers Pride Bamboo Fly Rod. I know that they were sold by Montgomery Wards back “in the day”. I re-furbished this rod and outfitted it with agate stripping guide and Nickel Titanium double foot guides in traditional deep red thread wraps. I am getting rid of this rod because it is sitting in my shop on a shelf and it is a rod I acquired in my quest for the perfect bamboo fly rod. The rod is very solid and would look just beautiful in anyone’s shadow box or corner study. Based on the amount of time into this rod including the full strip down and complete re-varnish, I believe this rod is a steal at $295.00 It is fishable and I always though this would be a great rod for small poppers or green drakes on the West Canada Creek. ...

    Kabuto Fiberglass fly rod build

Back in a cabin in the woods there is an almost clear 8 foot 5 weight fiberglass fly rod. It currently lays on my rod wrapping table sitting before two bottles of Johnny Walker Blue and a coffee machine. The rod is being built for a friend of mine John Wallace. It is a Kabuto 8 foot 5 weight 3 piece and it is a pleasure making this rod for John. As I write this, the cork handle is still drying and I expect to put that on the lathe tomorrow, do some finishing touches and finally epoxy the rod. John wanted some special apple green wraps on this rod, and after buying 2 different spools of silk thread, it turns out the thread I had all the time is probably the best color based on what her wants. The rod will have titanium carbide single foot guides no trim wraps and a reel seat that John...

Repairing a cork handle on a fly rod

Whether you are an avid angler or a once-in-a-while fisherman, the time will come when that cork handle on your favorite rod will need some repairs. The dog may chew on it because of your scent, the repetitive sticking it with the hooks from the lures when you're not using it will wear it away or sometimes just age and use will take its toll. Don't throw it away; there is a very simple way to fix or repair it with things most people have around the house.Instructions Difficulty: Moderate Things you will need:Cork from a wine bottle Sandpaper or a wood rasp Wood glueStep 1: Cut a piece of the cork to the approximate size of the missing area in the handle. Step 2: Create cork sawdust from the remaining part of the cork by using the sandpaper or wood rasp. Step 3: Mix the cork sawdust with the...

JP Ross Releases the MUIR Glass pack rod. 7 foot 3 weight 5 piece

We found there was a need for a special fly rod in the market.  The rod would carry the excitement of the new age fiberglass fly rods, but would also be technically advanced and have a purpose.     Glass is not nearly as advanced as carbon fiber, and also is not as diverse.  However, glass does have its place in some specialized applications.  One specific application is smaller stream fly fishing.  No matter for Bass, Trout, or even Panfish, we feel that the action of fiberglass is perfect for these applications.  There is, or was until now, a void in the offering the market yields in regards to pack-able high performance glass.  So we decided to fill that niche with the MUIR.   The MUIR is a 7 foot medium action 3 weight, 7 foot glass fly rod.  This first release is one of many that you will see from...

7 foot 6 inch 4 weight 3 piece Kabuto Fiberglass fly rod for small streams

Over a month ago my friend and customer Jason Bristol told me he waned me to make him a new glass fly rod. I was excited to do this for him, especially when he told me it would be on a Kabuto Blank. The blank he chose was a 7'6" 4 weight 3 piece. Now I have made well over 5000 fly rods in my life as a custom fly rod builder; there is just something about a Kabuto Blank that turns me on and gets me excited. I would recon that I probably went through about 200 Jimmy Buffett songs, a case of beer, and many a free moment staring at this blank in the workshop before I started building on it. I recently have done a few trips, and also have been really busy at my day job as a product manager; so I knew the moment had...

Special Edition Yellow Fiberglass Eagle Creek Special fly rod for Fiberglass Manifesto

I started my yellow glass build for Cameron at Fiberglass Manifesto this week. This specifications on this rod are based on Cameron's input. The rod has a slide band cork reel seat made of silver. I decided to go with rope knurl on the rings. We also put the JP Ross Templar Cross on the but cap. In order to do this, we have to have the but cap diamond etched and then polished. The grip is a 6 inch cork Flor Grade Cigar shape grip. I think the reel seat with Cross and the Cigar handle look really nice. I added a Jungle Cock Feather inlay, and also inscribed the rod with "the Fiberglass Manifesto" below the feather. The fly rod blank is rolled by Mike Mcarland, but is slower than most of his stuff. I wanted a 6 foot 11 inch 2 or 3 weight 3 piece rod for...

Garcia Conolon Live Fiber Fiberglass Fly Rod for Sale with 1950 Pfleuger Medalist Reel, recently refurbished by JP Ross Fly Rods

Hi Everyone. As some of you may know, I truley enjoy refurbishing old fly rods. I have done many over the years and recently my love of fiberglass fly rods has brought me to this treasure. Here is what we have; it is a Vintage Conolon Garcia Live Fiber 7 foot 8 inch fly rod. The history of Narmco, the name of the company that designed this rod is below. It is a very interesting history I must say, considering they were the first company to make tubular glass blanks. I purchased this rod in some what pristine shape, however I wanted to fish it.What I have done is completely re-done this rod to make it look better than original and completely fishable. I have varnished the entire blankPolished and cleaned the beautiful brass ferrulesCleaned the handle and epoxied the thread wrapsYou also will notice that I added a new stripping...
